Artist #LuluSotelo is as productive as ever! Often working one-on-one via video calls with Studio Instructor Veronica Rojas, Lulu is depicting her signature 'El Chavo del Ocho' characters in several mediums. She's also been making portraits of her friends from the Studio, painting jackets, and inventing new embroidery techniques like "the Lulu Knot." Lulu recently ran through her textile supplies and began repurposing old t-shirts, bedsheets, and even stuffing from her pillows to make amazing dolls complete with clothes and wigs!⠀

Creative Growth was founded in 1974 on the belief that everyone has the ability to express themselves creatively, and the right to access the means of creative expression. Julie spoke about her curatorial process: "The two I am thinking of so far are about the first time I visited one of my favorite cities. They remind me of soothing emotions/thoughts/feelings/realizations I felt in my inner-self. I had these thoughts and realizations while settling in the first couple of days/nights, while vacationing in Copenhagen, Denmark. These realizations about being in a new country and city were really soothing.⁠⠀

The city and country seemed great, like nothing could hurt me, and I just felt so safe, comfortable. I enjoyed experiencing a new country and city. One reason I think I felt safe was, they are so eco-friendly over in Copenhagen, Denmark. Riding bicycles are so popular. I haven’t ridden a bike in Copenhagen, Denmark, yet. I hope to one day. These are like an abstract version of my inner-self emotions, about vacationing in Copenhagen, Denmark, for the first time."

We're thrilled to announce the launch of our next viewing room next week, dedicated to Monica Valentine! Monica creates optically charged sculptures composed of foam shapes that are densely covered with beads and sequins. Having lost her sight in childhood, Monica has the ability to feel color by the temperature of an object (a form of synesthesia) and has developed a deep connection to color that not only informs her art practice, but serves as a mode to orient, communicate, and empower herself in the world. Join us next Thursday, August 6th to delve into the details behind Monica's artistic process, and purchase brilliant new work that she has created at home during shelter-in-place.⁠⠀
